Many of you may not be familiar with the COVID-19 alert levels in the US, which are based on local hospitalization rates and numbers of known infections. The details aren’t particularly important (particularly given the variability of testing regimes in different parts of the country and world), but what is important for us is that Fairbanks being in the “Orange” alert category means a change to the rules for COVID-Mitigation on campus. Specifically:
Orange (high): Masks required indoors and outdoors when you can’t stay 6 feet away from others.
We were planning on doing this anyway, so it doesn’t really change what we’re doing very much. What this means is that masking during the conference for participants is no longer just an expectation born out of concern for each other, but a requirement under campus policy for everyone. Note that you are allowed to remove your mask indoors while eating or drinking, but you should maintain social distancing.
Don’t expect this to be a requirement everywhere. Most places in Fairbanks will not be enforcing these kinds of rules, this policy is specific to the University. Be aware that being at the Orange alert level means there is a heightened risk of community spread, and when possible you should think about reducing your risk. For example, when eating out you may want to consider getting takeout or eating at locations with outdoor seating to reduce your exposure risk.
Also, you are being supplied with three COVID-19 tests in your registration kit. You should use one the first day of the conference, and on Wednesday and Friday or if you are feeling any symptoms. If you need more tests, we have them, just ask Gordon or Leah for more tests.
