Title: Geometry & Art – A Personal Perspective

Abstract:

The word “geometry” evokes the concepts of points, circles, triangles, and solids like spheres and polyhedra. And yet, geometry is so much more than that! Mathematicians use geometry to study the structure of certain mathematical objects, while artists use the pleasing effects of proportion, shape, and pattern to produce their art. In this talk, we will consider examples from painting, sculpting, printmaking, photography, installation, decorative art (such as mosaics), and architecture. The talk aims to present the influence of geometry in the development and the aesthetics of the visual arts, particularly in the western tradition (based on personal experiences with artworks). It will consider the interaction of mathematics and art through symmetry, focusing on creations where geometry inspired artists starting from antiquity, through the Renaissance, to the present day.
